I have been seeing endless pictures of smoothie bowls on Instagram of late – they seem to be a new craze. I was keen to try one and see what the fuss was about. Mine is definitely not up there with the works of art I have seen but for a first try I was pretty impressed. It is basically a thick smoothie that you top with fruit and anything that takes your fancy and you eat with a spoon. It is a bit difficult to spend much time on presentation when you have two 7 year olds packing their bags, finishing breakfast, reading their home readers and asking you a million times “What are you doing Momma?”
The kids both had a spoonful before I even had a chance to sit down and enjoy my pretty breakfast. Archie my son kept coming back for more, smacking his lips and saying, “ooh that is good Momma. That gets a thumbs up” So I suspect we will be making smoothie bowls this weekend. I will try to make mine even more decorative!
Slice any fruit you fancy for the top so it is ready to go. Banana, Kiwi Fruit, Strawberries, Blueberries. Other good ideas might be some Passionfruit, raspberries, any berries. Halved grapes, sliced stone fruit. Whatever is in season, is plentiful and ripe!
1 frozen sliced banana (I generally have bags of frozen bananas in the fridge)
Handful of strawberries
Handful of blueberries
Couple of teaspoons of Chia Fresca (chia seeds that have been soaked in water – I tend to have a container always in the fridge)
You want the smoothie quite thick so add the milk (or liquid of choice gradually)
Once happy with it pour into a bowl and then bring out your inner artist to decorate the top.
Sit down and enjoy with a spoon!
A newly discovered treat.
